Augmented Reality Research & Development

Augmented Reality is a field undergoing constant redefinition so maintaining proximity to research is vital. Accordingly, we remain true to our roots, working today as we have always done on a variety of projects involving a number of different institutions.

Research Project: VENTURI

October 2011 - September 2014

One of the goals of the VENTURI (immersiVe ENhancemenT of User-woRld Interactions) European scientific project is the development of a next generation mobile platform equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, highly powerful from an IT standpoint, tailored specifically towards the demands posed by Augmented Reality. The developments envisioned by VENTURI could have endless applications in the field of technological and innovative services based on smart, adaptable, and customizable media, that target user expectations. metaio will contribute with research on the Augmented Reality platform, tracking and reconstruction as well as user interaction.

Research Project: CRUMBS - Places and Augmented Reality in Social Networks

July 2010 - July 2013

CRUMBS aims to explore a new way of organizing information in a social network based on users interacting with their physical environments while wandering around. This idea means that users will consume rich multimedia social content "stuck" in different places by using their mobile phone as a mixer between the real world, captured by the mobile camera, and the (crumbs) social content provided by CRUMBS users. In cooperation with an associated partner, the German sub-project, which is part of an overall European CELTIC project with participation of Spain and Poland, will develop and evaluate scenarios in the field of eTourism. metaio's research topics include robust localization of mobile devices, AR authoring tools and context-sensitivity. The sub-project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and supervised by the DLR (German Aerospace Center).

Research Project: EFA 2014

September 2009 - August 2011

Eleven partners from the German automotive industry join forces to explore innovative technologies and concepts for boosting energy efficiency in vehicles. Firstly, cars are to become "intelligent" and, for example, use knowledge of the planned route to develop proactive operating strategies designed to save energy and, based on this, initiate appropriate responses in good time on the part of the car or driver. Secondly, the vehicle power supply and associated components are to be specifically tailored to the possibilities of these intelligent operating strategies. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF) and supervised by the VDI TZ.

Research Project: AVILUS

March 2008 - April 2011

Within the AVILUS project, a consortium of 28 leading industrial companies, small and medium enterprises (SME), as well as research facilities develop and prove high performance technologies in the field of virtual and augmented reality. Amongst other topics, metaio's research is focused on 3D reconstruction of the environment, real-time (3D) tracking and platform independence. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF) and supervised by the DLR (German Aerospace Center).

Research Project: IMRONET

January 2007 - July 2010

metaio is one of six partners of the IMRONET project. The project develops and tests web-based multimedia and multi-modal user interfaces for teleoperating robots. Within IMRONET metaio contributes amongst other topics in the fields of robot-camera-calibration and AR-based user interfaces. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and supervised by the DLR (German Aerospace Center).

Research Project: DIFAC

May 2006 - April 2009

Intention of the EU sponsored research project DiFac - Digital Factory for Human-Oriented Production System is the development of an innovative, collaborative production environment (CME) for the next generation of the digital plant, targeted to SMEs.

Research Project: BAYTOU

December 2004 - December 2006

metaio was part of a program for the advancement of technology-oriented start-ups, sponsored by the Bavarian government.

Research Project: FORLOG

October 2004 - October 2007

metaio is an industrial partner of the project MitLog ("Employee qualification and mobility") within the "Bavarian research network for supra-adaptive logistic systems". The project is supported by the Bavarian Research Foundation. For more information please visit FORLOG.

Research Project: ARTESAS

February 2004 - June 2006

ARTESAS aims at the exploration and evaluation of Augmented Reality base technologies for applications in industrial service environments. ARTESAS is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research and supervised by the DLR (German Aerospace Center).
